1. OPERATIONS UPDATE Operations Summary for August 20 - September 8Weekly operations scheduling meetings are held on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in the Building 6 conference room. The Accelerator Status Hotline at (510) 486-6766 (ext. 6766 from Lab phones) features a recorded message giving up-to-date information on the operational status of the accelerator.
2. DRAFT LONG-TERM SCHEDULE GIVES USERS MORE WEEKDAY BEAMTIME A draft of the long-term schedule of operations for January to May 1998 is now available from the ALS for comment. The new schedule implements a user-suggested change in weekly operations that increases the number of user shifts on weekdays. This change was made after extended discussions with the Users' Executive Committee and will be implemented on a trial basis. The draft schedule includes two shutdown periods: the first week in January will be devoted to installation of two front ends for bend-magnet beamlines; and a month-long shutdown beginning in the middle of April will be for installation of a new undulator in sector 10, realignment of the storage ring, installation of new windows for the storage-ring radio-frequency cavities, and other necessary tasks. The fractions of time allotted to 1.9- and 1.5-GeV multibunch and for two-bunch operation are similar to those in recent schedules. A copy of the new schedule was mailed to users on Friday, August 15. If you would like a copy and did not receive one, send a message to alsuser@lbl.gov with "please send long-term schedule" in the subject line and either your full postal mailing address or your fax number in the body of the message. Users who have comments about the draft schedule should send them to Fred Schlachter (email: fred_schlachter@lbl.gov; fax: 510-486-6499) by August 29. A final operating schedule will be issued shortly thereafter and distributed to all current and scheduled ALS users and will be posted on the World Wide Web.
3. CONTROL SYSTEM DATA ARCHIVE AVAILABLE ON THE WEB Data from the ALS accelerator control system's data archive is now available to users and staff via the Web. Through this service, users can get useful information about storage-ring current, energy, and other parameters from their home institution. The system collects accelerator-related data from 7,000 channels every three minutes and updates the archive daily. Access is limited to Laboratory use or external use with password protection. From Laboratory computers, point your browser to http://www-controls.als.lbl.gov. For external access, contact Alan Biocca (AKBiocca@lbl.gov) for password information.
