Registration

Before beginning work at the ALS, all users must register with the ALS User Services Office, complete required safety training, and obtain a Berkeley Lab ID Proximity Access Card.

The registration process MUST be completed online by new users at least TWO WEEKS prior to arrival at the ALS.

New users who are not U.S. citizens need to provide additional documentation and should look at Documents for Foreign Nationals well ahead of their visit. All relevant documents must be brought to the ALS in order to complete the registration process.

New users who are the Principal Investigator or the Experimenter in Charge for a scientific program must ensure that a User Agreement between Berkeley Lab and the user's home institution has been established before work begins at the ALS. Please allow one month for this process.

Important Notice: Owing to increased security practices at Berkeley Lab, all visiting researchers and students must present photo identification, and a document confirming that they will be working at the ALS, to security personnel at the Lab's Blackberry Gate entrance. See the LBNL Security Update Web page for additional information about security procedures and access to Berkeley Lab.

New User Registration

Renewing User Registration

The requirements to renew a badge depend on whether the badge is already past the expiration date and on whether the user’s training has expired. Please send an email to the Users Office one week before your visit to the ALS to determine the requirements. Non-US citizens will need to show up-to-date documentation to get their badge reactivated.

Getting to LBNL and the ALS

Finding a parking space at Berkeley Lab can be very difficult. Users are strongly encouraged to use the Berkeley Lab shuttles whenever possible (see Directions, Maps).

Parking at Berkeley Lab and the ALS is by permit only. Signs in each parking lot designate the types of permit required for that area. Cars parked in no-parking areas or reserved spaces without appropriate permits may be cited or towed. Parking permits can be issued by the main LBNL badge office (Building 65A) after completing registration at the ALS. Students are allowed to park on-site during business hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday), only if granted an exception.
