Overview
The purpose of this advisory is to orient personnel to the chemical
hygiene and safety rules of the Experimental System Group (ESG) Instrumentation
Laboratory in Building 2, Room 457.
The information given here should not be considered comprehensive; users
must also follow rules for chemical hygiene and safety given in the Laboratory's Health
and Safety Manual PUB-3000, and the Laboratory's Chemical
Hygiene and Safety Plan (PUB-5341).
Access
A valid ALS proximity (key) card with specific coding for access to
the ESG Instrumentation Laboratory is required to enter Room 2-457. Contact
Richard Celestre (ext. 7263) to have your key card updated for laboratory
access.
Hygiene and Safety Rules
All of the usual laboratory equipment and chemical safety precautions
apply in the ESG Instrumentation Laboratory. Some additional rules are
necessary because it is a multi-user laboratory.
Labeling of chemicals and other substances
Label
all substances that are not in their original containers with the owner’s
name and phone number, the date, the names of the chemicals, and their
physical and health hazards.
Keep any substances brought into the laboratory in a white plastic spill
tray (trays provided in cabinets behind flow-hood). Label the tray with
the date, and owner name and phone number. Any articles not kept in a
labeled tray will be subject to removal.
Remove ALL chemicals and materials brought into the laboratory
when the work is complete.
Use of solvents
There is no fume hood in the ESG Instrumentation
Laboratory. Only acetone and alcohol, dispensed from the plastic wash
bottles, are permitted for use to clean parts. The ALS Chemistry Laboratory,
located in Building 10, Room 102, is a recommended site for cleaning
small UHV parts; see
User Advisory 11, ALS Chemistry Laboratory:
Facilities and Safety Requirements for more information.
Cleanliness
Keep the ESG Instrumentation Laboratory clean at all times.
Ensure that all glassware and surfaces you have used are clean before
you leave the laboratory. Chemical waste may not be poured down the
drain or put directly into the garbage. If you need to dispose of any
substances brought into the laboratory for your work, please contact
Rich Celestre (ext. 7263).
Do not eat or drink in the laboratory.
Hazardous equipment
The ESG Instrumentation Laboratory
2-457 may be used for the development and testing of experimental equipment.
This may require introducing potentially hazardous equipment into the
laboratory on a temporary basis. Examples of potentially hazardous equipment
and materials include:
- Class 3b or 4 lasers
- Open flames
- High-voltage power supplies
- Liquid cryogens.
Please notify Richard Celestre (ext. 7263) if your work requires this.
All equipment and materials must be in a secure, inactive state if
left unattended.
Equipment Available
- Laminar-flow hood for clean assembly of nonhazardous experiment samples.
Users wishing to leave equipment or substances unattended in the flow
hood should contact Richard Celestre (ext. 7263).
- Polishing, cutting, and heating equipment for experiment sample preparation.
- Optical table for set-up and test of instrumentation under development.
- Microscope with encoded positioning stages.
- Bench for cutting and
soldering small parts.
Equipment Labeling and
Unattended Equipment
All equipment brought to the laboratory for use on a temporary basis
must be labeled with the owner’s name and phone number, and the
date.
Unattended equipment is subject to being moved or removed from the laboratory
unless special arrangements are made. Please notify Richard Celestre (ext.
7263) if equipment must be left set-up and unattended.
